TFPC honours Joe Mihevc

On January 9th, the Toronto Food Policy Council honoured former Toronto City Councillor, former Toronto Board of Health Chair, former TFPC member and all-round food champion Joe Mihevc. The room was packed with residents and food advocates who wanted to say thanks to Joe. There were tributes from Rachel Gray, chair of the TFPC; Jan Houston, Director of Strategic Support at Toronto Public Health; and Barbara Emanuel, Manager of the Toronto Food Strategy (left to right on Joe’s left Joe in the photo below. Lori Stahlbrand, coordinator of the TFPC, is standing to Joe’s right). Joe responded with passionate words about the connection between social justice and food

Joe was a strong advocate on many food issues. He played a key role in the creation of The Stop’s Farmers’ Market in the historic Artscape Wychwood Barns; he worked to expand community gardening; he organized public events to address food and poverty in the city; and he was a driving force in increasing the City of Toronto’s contributions to student nutrition programs which provide healthy snacks and meals to more than 200,000 students each school day.
