Recap of Food Access event for #TacklePovertyTO

On March 19th, 2018, the City of Toronto hosted a panel around Food Access as part of their 5 part series, #TacklePovertyTO. It`s an election year in Toronto and this initiative aims to spark new ideas to tackle poverty over the next four years. Councillor Joe Mihevc was named Toronto’s poverty reduction advocate in October 2017. As reported in The Star, Mihevc hopes this series will generate bold ideas “to set the stage” for the next phase of Toronto’s 20-year poverty reduction strategy, approved by city council in 2015.”

The 5 panel sessions are (or were) on:

  • Quality Jobs and Livable Incomes – March 12
  • Food Access – March 19 – official backgrounder available here.
  • Service Access and Coordination – March 26
  • Transportation Equity – April 16
  • Housing Stability – April 23

Lori Stahlbrand (Health Policy Specialist responsible for the TFPC) moderated this panel, which consisted of:

  • Cassandra Chambers – Member, Lived Experience Advisory Group and BossDiva manager
  • Tara Ramkhelawan – Senior Coordinator of Good Foods Markets, FoodShare ()
  • Lauren Baker – Global Alliance for the Future of Food, former Health Policy Specialist with the TFPC )
  • Ryan Noble – Executive Director of the North York Harvest Food Bank and member of the TFPC )
